螺旋形是世界远古文明和古代文明普遍流行的符号。起初出现在石刻和岩画中，继而出现在陶器、玉器、青铜器、建筑以及其他器物中，至今仍然焕发着生命的气息。
岩画中的螺旋形符号最早源于环太平洋地区，在美洲流行的时间最长。由于符号十分抽象，有深不可测的神秘感，不少人将其解释为外星人的遗物。

先民对螺旋形的钟爱以不同方式延续到现在，这恐怕是“外星人说”无法解释的。
远古文明是宗教文明，螺旋形究竟包含了何种宗教情怀？
在秘鲁南部干旱山谷有一种洞穴，被称为puquios。据说这是一个复杂的液压系统，螺旋孔将风吹入下面的运河，以灌溉周围的沙漠。[11] 可见，将孔筑成螺旋形是基于风吹动时为螺旋形的观念。

一位风神吹出的风是螺旋形，一位风神的形象为螺旋形。可见螺旋形是对旋风的模仿，是风或风神的象征，是风崇拜的重要符号。
